Melbourne hotel prices soar 11 per cent
THE surging Australian dollar and the strength of the inbound Asian tourist market has pushed up hotel prices in Melbourne and Sydney, a survey shows. Melbourne prices were up 11 per cent in the six months to June 2011 compared with a year earlier. It was the equal fourth highest rise in the world with Buenos Aires, according to a survey of hotel prices on the website hotels.com. Sydney hotel prices were up 10 per cent, sharing sixth spot with Florence. They outstripped the average global price for a room rose of 3 per cent. Most Australian capital cities recorded increases, but Canberra bucked the trend with an 8 per cent fall. However, the national capital still had the highest average price in the country, at $A177.
